UP boat accident: 57 dead

Lucknow, Jun 15: The rescue workers involved with the UP boat accident recovered 12 more bodies with river Ganges and the death toll in the tragedy has climbed to 57, police informed the media on Tuesday, Jun 15.

The rescuers had found out 45 bodies till Monday, Jun 14 night. Among the dead were 17 children, 14 women and 14 men. 17 people were either rescued or managed to swim safely, informed the Police. Search operation is still continuing in the area.

The incident happened in the Dubahar area of Uttar Pradesh when a boat carrying the villages mainly from four families in Ujveria was going from Ojhawalia Ghat to attend a family function on the other side of the river, capsized. The boat was boarding around 70 passengers, above its capacity of 30.

"A magisterial inquiry will be conducted by additional DM AK Dwiwedi and an FIR will also be filed against the driver of the boat," said the Police officials.

Mayawati, UP Chief Minister had announced the ex-gratia of Rs one lakh each, to the relatives of the deceased.
