Jat protest leads to water crisis in New Delhi

New Delhi, Jun 14: Jat leaders demanding reservation in government jobs stopped the water supply from the Upper Ganga canal in Uttar Pradesh leading to a water crisis in the national capital on Monday, Jun 14.

South and East Delhi areas were the worst hit by the shortage of water. Delhi government has contacted the Uttar Pradesh authorities in a bid to restore the water supply.

The jat agitation was led by local BKU and Lok Dal leaders in Muradnagar in Ghaziabad district. Leaders of Akhil Bhartiya Jat Sangarsh Samiti (ABJSS) on Sunday, Jun 13 night blocked the water supply from the Upper Ganga Canal in Muradnagar. The protesters also threw the keys of the waterworks into the canal.

The jats are demanding reservation in higher education and employment in both public and private sectors and also amendment in the 1955 Hindu Marriage Act to ban same gotra weddings.
