Six militants surrender in Manipur

Imphal, June 10 (ANI): At least six hardcore militants belonged to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the Kangleipak Communist Party- Military Council (KCP-MC) surrendered to the security force here on Wednesday.

An exclusive event was held to mark this occasion in the presence of Joykumar Singh, Director General of Police (DGP), Manipur and Major General D S Hooda, General Officer Commanding of 57 Mountain Division of Indian Army.

"We have seen a number of surrenders that have taken place.... And I think it is a testimony to the face that slowly people are realising the futility of violence and their desire to lead a peaceful life," said Major General D S Hooda, GOC, 57 Mt. Div.he surrendered cadres also handed over one M-16 Assault Rifle, one magazine, five 9-mm pistols with five magazines and five 9-mm live rounds.

Sixteen youths who were lured by KCP-MC on the false pretext of jobs and money and later taken to a militant camp against their will were also rescued and sent back to their respective families.

India's northeastern region is home to over 200 tribes and ethnic groups and is wracked by separatist insurgencies.

In Manipur alone, more than half-a-dozen guerrilla groups are fighting over 50,000 troops, some battling for freedom and others for political autonomy. (ANI)
