After consolidation, mkts end with marginal gains
Mumbai, Jun 9: After witnessing consolidation throughout the session, the benchmarks ended the day with marginal gains. While Nifty held on close to the 5k mark, Sensex's journey was also slow in pace.
BSE Sensex shut shop at 16,657.89, up just 40.79 points, NSE Nifty ended at 5000.30, up 13.20 points.
Since the opening bell, Nifty struggled hard to hold on to the psychological 5,000 mark. The markets have been on a southbound journey for the past two sessions due to heavy sell off and weak global cues.

Mkts consolidate; Airtel surges on Zain news
Short covering helped the Nifty pick itself in the afternoon session. European cues were also supporting the Indian markets.
At 2: 20 pm, BSE Sensex was trading at 16,670.92, up 53.82 points,; NSE Nifty was at 5005.35, up 18.25 points.
Heavyweight ITC, was down 3.4 per cent as it suffered selling. Other losers on the trade were Tata Power, Wipro, Infosys, NTPC, Tata Motors, HUL, Power Grid and Jaiprakash Associates.
The top gainers were Bharti Airtel up 4.92 per cent; Sterlite Industries up 2.50 per cent; Reliance Infrastructure up 2.20 per cent; ACC up 2.13 per cent; SAIL up 2.12 per cent and ICICI Bank up 1.83 per cent.

Mkts consolidate; Airtel surges on Zain news
Following two days of sell off and trading in the red, the benchmarks were consolidating. While Nifty continued to face resistance at the 5000 mark, Sensex was only marginally up.
At 11:40 am, BSE Sensex was at 16,709.63, up 92.53 points; NSE Nifty was at 5015.35, up just 28.25
points. The broader indices were outperforming the benchmark indices.
While the markets were gaining positive support from oil & gas, telecom, realty and banking companies' shares, selling continued in ITC, Wipro, Infosys, Tata Motors, Tata Power, L&T, Hero Honda, Sun Pharma, Jaiprakash Associates, HCL Tech, HDFC, Power Grid, Hindalco, Jindal Steel and Cipla.
Shooting up 6 per cent, Bharti Airtel emerged as a top gainer on Tuesday, Jun 8 announcement that it has taken control of Zain Assets.
Among the other gainers were BPCL up 2.71 per cent; ONGC up 2.57 per cent; Idea Cellular up 1.78 per cent; M&M up 1.20 per cent; Reliance Communications up 1.04 per cent; HDFC Bank up 0.95 per cent and DLF up 0.87 per cent.

Nifty faces resistance at 5k; auto, oil, metal up
Nifty opened the day on a flat note for the second consequtive day. The benchmark was facing resistance at the 5k mark on quiet trade in Asian markets while Sensex was also up by just 30 points in the opening trade.
At 9:03 am, NSE Nifty was trading at 4998, up 112 points and BSE Sensex was at 16650, up 30 points. The CNX Midcap gained 55 points to 7796 and BSE Smallcap went up by 32 points at 8501.
Buying interest was seen in oil & gas, metal, realty, financials and auto sectors. Among the early gainers were BPCL, Bharti Airtel, Hindalco, Cairn India, SAIL, Sterlite Industries, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, Unitech, ONGC and DLF.
However, ITC, HCL Tech, Tata Power, Infosys, HDFC, Reliance Communications and NTPC were the frontliners under pressure.
Among the midcaps and the smallcaps, Bajaj Finserv surged 10 per cent, M&M Financial went up 0.6 per cent, Rana Sugars gained 2 per cent; Texmo Pipes shot up 5 per cent and Marico 6 per cent. Fortis Healthcare, Lakshmi Vilas Bank, Sesa Goa and Ashok Leyland gained 1.2 to 1.5 per cent.
