An '87 VW Beetle is all that Uruguayan President Mujica owns

London, June 5 (ANI): India's extravagant politicians could learn a thing or two about simple living, high thinking from Uruguay's Leftist President Jose Mujica who has declared that his entire net worth is nothing more than a rickety 1987 Volkswagen Beetle valued at 1,300 pounds, as he has put his tiny flower-farm in his wife's name and does not hold a bank-account.

His sworn statement, made public this week, shows that Mujica has no debt - or savings - and does not own any other property.

Son of the soil and devoted Leftist Mujica is well loved for his frugal living and humility, and is known to donate most of his 8000-pound presidential salary to the ruling Left-wing coalition apart from for public housing programmes.

According to The Telegraph, seventy five-year-old Mujica is a former Leftist guerilla who had been jailed for more than a decade for his guerilla activities during the 60s and 70s.

The spartan Mujica is known to eschew formal wear like suits and ties and has even refused to assume his formal presidential residence, preferring his wife's humble home located on the outskirts of the capital, Montevideo.

In contrast, his vice president Danilo Astori's declared wealth of £173,000 includes a house and car worth nearly 10 times Mujica's Beetle. (ANI)
