Phet intensifies; coastal Gujarat at risk

Ahmedabad, Jun 2: Phet, the tropical cyclone in the Arabian sea has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, threatening the coastal Gujarat.

It has moved to north-west and lay centred 1000 km southwest of Naliya in Kutch district. Some parts of Gujarat received rainfall.

"The current environmental condition and Numerical Weather Prediction models suggest the system would intensify further into a very severe cyclonic storm and move slowly in a north-northwesterly direction for the next 24 hours and then re-curve northeastwards towards Gujarat and adjoining Pakistan coast," said the Indian Meteorological Department(IMD), on Wednesday, Jun 2.

They also said that very heavy rainfalls would commence over the coastal areas of Gujarat, from June 4 and increase thereafter. The wind speed in the coastal Gujarat would reach 65 to 75 kmph by Thursday, Jun 3 and increase gradually.

Fishermen have been suggested not to go out in sea, as sea would be rough with waves from south-west direction.
