GoM to set up on Caste Census issue
New Delhi, May 26: The government on Wednesday, May 26 decided to set up a Group of Ministers (GoM) to take a view on the controversial issue of caste-based census.
According to official sources , the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, discussed the issue over which the Cabinet seems to divided.
The Cabinet decided that a GoM should take a view on the issue. The GoM is likely to be headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
Lot of the Union Ministers from Cabinet Law Minister Veerappa Moily and some others are pushing for caste-based census, while some like Home Minister P. Chidambaram has reservations about it.
Several political parties, including Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Janata Dal (United ) have been pushing for caste-based census but the government is moving cautiously on the sensitive matter.
Prime
Minister
has
assured
that
the
decision
on
this
issue
will
be
taken
with
consideration
of
all
the
members
in
the
Paliament.

said
that
we
shall
take
into
account
the
views
expressed
in
Parliament
by
various
sections

that
I
will
ask
the
Cabinet
to
consider
them.
