AI plane crashes in Mangalore, 160 feared dead

Mangalore: About 160 passengers are feared dead as a Mangalore bound Air India Express flight coming from Dubai overshot the Mangalore airport runway by 2000 feet while landing on Saturday, 22 May at 6.30 am (IST).

According to eyewitness account, the Boeing 737 flight, which is believed to be carrying 165 passengers including 4 infants burst into flames soon after it overshot the runway while landing.

"There were 163 passengers and six crew members and we fear all of them have been killed," top airport security official told on Saturday.

Cause of the accident is not yet assertained. Mangalore airport is having only limited facilities. Hard to believe this is an international airport.

Television footage showed the plane, which was arriving from Dubai, apparently lying on its belly, with smoke billowing from the fuselage as rescue workers sought to douse the fire.

But lated on twitter users posted that around 11 passengers were rescued.

Air India and the airport authorities opened one helpline number.
