Southwest monsoon arrives early

Pune, May 18: The much awaited southwest monsoon has arrived three days in advance to Andaman-Nicobar Islands and the parts of south Bay of Bengal.

The normal date for the onset of monsoon over Andaman-Nicobar Islands is May 20.

HR Hatwar, the Director General of India meteorological Department (IMD) said, "If the current conditions continue, the monsoon would cover the entire Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea within the next couple of days."

He also said that the condition is favourable for getting further rainfall over more parts of Bay of Bengal and then the monsoon would hit Kerala on May 30, one day prior to the normal onset date.

Hatwar also thinks that the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala indicates the arrival of monsoon over the Indian subcontinent. The monsoon over Maharashtra would be on time, over Jun 7.
