Cyclonic storm kills 3 in Tripura

Agarthala, May 17: Cyclonic storm damaged several parts of Tripura where at least three lost their lives and over 10 were injured, on Sunday, May 16 night.

The pre-monsoon rain was accompanied by hail storm, heavy lightening and strong wind which destructed more than 1000 houses. Hundreds of trees, electric poles and telephone poles were destroyed in the cyclone.

The storm also took the lives of many cattle in the western and southern Tripura.

"Three people, including a woman, were killed in separate incidents of wall collapse and lightning at Teliamura in western Tripura," said a relief department official to the media. He also said that the injured have been shifted to government hospitals.

"Civil defence workers and district officials are busy providing relief. Telecommunication and power corporation personnel are working to restore communication lines and power supply," the official said.

The Meteorological experts said that the cyclonic rainstorm will continue till the onset of monsoon, in Jun 2010.
