NRI imprisoned for raping mentally challenged
Chicago, May 15: A man of Indian-origin was sentenced for four years imprisonment as the court rejected his plea, for abusing a mentally challenged girl.
Shreya Lal, from Lombard near Chicago will get registered as the 'lifetime convicted sex offender', on the release, too.
Shreya Lal was accused of sexually abusing the 20-year old girl, who has the mental capability of a five-year old, in Jun 2009. He invited her to come home and did the act at his residence. He took the victim's mobile phone from her and threatened her of physical harm, if she reported the event to the police.
He was under custody since his arrest in June last year.
The attorney of the accused told that he was also mentally unhealthy and was suffering from 'cognitive reasoning dysfunction'.
Lal would be admitted at a correctional centre for neurological, developmental and cognitive problems. He should also serve 85 percent of the sentence before the parole.
The sexually abused girl lives with her mother. They obtained a 2009 protective order on behalf of the victim against Lal.
