Govt decides to dissolve scam-hit MCI

New Delhi, May 14: The government on Thursday, May 13, decided to dissolve the scandal-hit Medical Council of India (MCI), days after its President Ketan Desai was held by the CBI on graft charges.

During its meeting, the union cabinet also decided to appoint a seven-member panel of eminent doctors to take care of the functioning of the MCI.

The MCI found itself in the center of controversy after Desai, was arrested for by CBI on Apr 22, for allegedly accepting bribe to grant permission to a Punjab medical college, which lacks the required infrastructure, to recruit new batch of students.

Desai has already submitted his resignation to the MCI Vice-President P C Kesavankutty Nair, who in turn has forwarded the resignation letter to the Health Ministry.

The MCI, constituted under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1933, is responsible for ensuring uniform standards in medical education and to grant recognition to medical degrees awarded in India and abroad.

The permission of MCI is required for medical colleges across the country to increase the number of seats, to set up new medical college, to add new courses.
