Motormen strike clogs Mumbai lifeline

Mumbai, May 4: What started off as a hunger strike undertaken by the motormen to demand hike in pay scale and allowances turned into a state of total chaos by the evening on Monday, May 3.

The motormen refused to drive the local trains frustrating thousands of commuters, who were returning home after work. The Mumbaikars had to take buses and taxis which lead to massive traffic jams. There have been reports of taxi drivers overcharging the passengers too.

Angered by the strike, a group of commuters resorted to violence at Churchgate station and vandalised ticket counters.

As per reports ten motormen have been sacked. The regional labour officer will hold a meeting at 11 am on Tuesday, May 4 to facilitate communication between Railway authorities and the representatives of motormen.

However, there is no respite for the communters even on Tuesday, May 4 as only 15 percent trains will be running.
