Leh region receives fresh snowfall, locals fear crop damage
Leh (Jammu and Kashmir), Apr 25 (ANI): Leh region of Jammu and Kashmir has received light to moderate snowfall on its higher reaches.
The snowfall started at around 1 pm on Saturday and lasted for several hours.
Snowfall also lashed other high altitude areas of the region including Kargil, Changthang, Zangskar and Nubra valley.
It disturbed the normal life besides affecting road and air traffic in the remote Himalayan region.
The movement of traffic on all roads, including 240 kilometers long Kargil-Leh, strategic Leh-Nubra and number of roads to far flung remote areas in the Ladakh region were closed due to snowfall.
All flights from local airport have been cancelled for the last two days.
Meanwhile, locals fear that the snowfall would harm agriculture.
"Though snowfall is good for the Ladakh region but snowfall in this season will cause some damage also...this will harm the agriculture of the region. It will also harm the tourism and other activities like construction in the region," said Tsetan Angchuk.
Since Leh is situated at an altitude of 3,500 meters, only one crop a year can be possible as the region is frozen for several months in winters. (ANI)
