Foreign Secretary to brief media ahead of PM's visit to Washington
New Delhi, April 3 (ANI): Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao will brief media here on Sunday ahead of the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to the United States for Nuclear Security Summit.
Besides the U.S. visit, Dr. Manmohan Singh is also expected to travel to Brazil for the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Summit.
Nuclear security is of great interest to India in the wake of its apprehensions about safety of Pakistan's arsenal falling into the hands of terrorists. There have also been considerable concerns over the proliferation of nuclear technology and material originating from Pakistan.
The issue related to the upcoming Summit had come up in the discussions during Dr. Singh's visit to Washington last November.
While underlining India's commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons, the Prime Minister Dr. Singh had welcomed the renewed international interest in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation during his Washington visit.
The April Summit assumes great significance, as it precedes the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference expected to be held in May.
India is being pressed by the world to sign the NPT and the issue is expected to figure at the meet.
New Delhi, however, has declined to sign the NPT, as it observes it flawed and discriminatory. (ANI)
