Quake hits Andaman, tremor felt in Orissa, Chennai
New Delhi, Mar 31: An earthquake measuring up to 6.8 on the Richter scale hit the Andaman Nicobar Islands on Tuesday, Mar 30 night.
The quake hit the islands in the Bay of Bengal at around 10: 24 pm. However, as of now no damages have been reported.
The tremor was also felt in other places such as Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Jagatsinghpur and Jajpur prompting the people to get out of their houses and move into open spaces.
While the Indian authorities have pegged the magnitude at 6.8, US Geological Survey said the quake measured 6.4.
Quoting official sources, some reports state that there were tremors felt in various parts of Chennai also but no damages were reported.
Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has reportedly told the government that the earthquake posed no 'destructive widespread tsunami' threat.
