ABVP activists lathicharged, 12 arrested in Patna

Patna, Mar 29: Activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad were lathicharged by the police and 12 arrested as they staged protest outside the Bihar Assembly against the opening of a branch of Aligarh Muslim University in the state's Kishanganj district, media reports.

The activists demanded that the university should be opened in Katihar, as originally planned by the state goverment.

The students alleged that opening the university branch in Kishanganj would transform the district into a major haunt of militants.

Around three thousand members of the student wing of BJP tried to forced their way inside the assembly to meet the Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar with their demands.

The police resorted to lathicharge when the activists started pelting stones to cross the final barricade in Patna's R Block area, which is close to the Chief Minister's residence.
