Laser warfare to help boost transmission at sea
London, March 28 (ANI): Designs for a shipboard laser that may help focus a 100-kilowatt beam through the ocean mist have received the go ahead from the US navy.
The system, expected to cost around 160 million dollars, will draw on John Madey free-electron laser that helps generates light from a powerful beam of electrons, New Scientist reported.
Mike Rinn of Boeing, producer of the initial designs, elaborated on the ability of the free-electron laser to adjust its output wavelength to improve transmission through the thick, moist air at sea.
The laser was also said to be electrically powered, which meant it can recharge quickly, and may even allow repeat bursts of fire.
Plans to build the detailed design were next in the pipeline. (ANI)
