Bangalore, Mar 26: A woman was allegedly set on fire by her neighbours on Wednesday, Mar 24, for lodging a complaint against them, a newspaper report said.
25-year-old Shahida Begum was beaten up by her neighbours before they allegedly set her on fire.
She has reportedly suffered 95 per cent burns and has been admitted to Victoria Hospital.
Meanwhile, Shahida's aggrieved family are blaming the police of not taking action against the culprits.
"She will die in a few hours but the police are yet to record her statement," Shahida"s brother Shabbir, his voice choked with anguish said in a newspaper report.
However, Pulikeshi Nagar ACP B B Ashok Kumar denies the blame an has been lodged FIR after recording her statement.
"We lodged an FIR only after recording her statement," Kumar said.
Police have arrested Jabina, the main accused late in the evening.
Shabbir said that the attack on his sister was due to the complain lodged by Shahida after she was assaulted by her neighbour Jabina and her family.
He said that at around 1 PM on Wednesday, Mar 24, Jabina picked up a quarrel with Shahida after both of their sons fought over some issue. He added that Jabina refused to calm down despite her sister's attempt to pacify her.
Following which Shahida, who was canvassing for a Congress candidate contesting the civic polls, went out for campaigning.
But when she returned Jabina and some of her relatives barged into her room and started beating her up.
"My sister implored with them but that was to no avail," Shabbir said.
Shahida logded a police complaint of harassment and torture against some of her neighbours, including Jabina after the incident and went for canvassing again.
When she returned home at around 8 PM, Jabina, her uncle Imtiaz, and brothers Barkath, Zameer, Rahmath and Qadeer atacked her and poured six litres of kerosene on her body, Shabbir alleged.
He added that the attacker dragged Shahida outside and threw burning matchstick on her.
Shabbir alleged that the assaulters even attacked her husband Kaleem, mother Fatima Bi and sister Fahmida.
However, police said the neighbours are refuting the blame saying that Shahida had set herself on fire.
