L&T to build speed boats for the coast guard

Mumbai, Mar 22: The Ministry of Defence has handed over a Rs 977 crore worth project to Larsen & Toubro (L&T), under which the construction and engineering major will be designing and constructing 36 High Speed Interceptor Boats for the Indian Coast Guard.

The massive project in one of the major initiatives taken by the government to strengthen the coastal security, a need which arose after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008.

The interceptor boats will feature aluminium-alloy hull construction with water jet propulsion to enable quick response which is vital for such applications, the company said in a statement released on Monday, MAr 22.

The interceptors will also be able to operate effectively in shallow water that will be critical for near shore action. These boats will be expected to significantly enhance our coastal security, it added.

The designing part of the project will be carried out at L&T Ship Design Center, a part of the company's Heavy Engineering Division.

The construction is expected to be done at existing shipyard at Hazira, and at its new shipyard coming up at Katupalli near Ennore.
