Panchayat seeks eyes of eloping lovers

Noida, Mar 21: The village panchayat in Greater Noida ordered for the eyes of two lovers to be gouge out before shooting them dead in public.

The panchayat's judgement was passed against Javed and Sashista, who eloped and got married on Feb 13.

Stating that the couple had brought shame to the village, panchayat of Ghori Bachera under Dadri police station pronounced the verdict against Javed, nephew of a local BSP leader, Mehndi Hasan and his wife Sashista.

"Their act has brought shame to the entire village. They deserve severe punishment so that such acts are not repeated in future," said Hari Om Singh, another villager.

The incident came to light when the couple appeared before the Dadri"s sub- divisional magistrate and asked for police protection.

The villagers pelted stones at the Jasan's uncle Mehndi Hasan when he returned to the village with policemen.

An FIR has been registered against 17 people.

However, following the police intervention, mahapanchayat held on Friday, Mar 19, acknowledged their mistake and termed the Tuesday incident as a 'wrong judgment'.

Meanwhile the couple are living under police protection.

"The boy and girl had mutually consented to marriage. They are now living under protection," R K Saini, in- charge, Dadri police station said.
