New Delhi, Mar 20 (ANI): The World Wide Fund (WWF) organized a bicycle rally here on Saturday to support the 'Earth Hour 2010' campaign.

"Earth Hour is a campaign aimed at inspiring individual action towards environment conservation. Cycle rally is a symbolic gesture from our side," said Aarti Khosla, a supporter of the campaign.

"It is due to the World Wide Fund (WWF) and the supporters of the campaign that New Delhi is encouraged to adopt a more sustainable and a low carbon lifestyle. This is what takes a long way in making our city better than what it is right now," added Khosla.

According to Rajiv Nair, a member of World Wide Fund (WWF), nowadays people are more dependent on mechanised mode of transport and seldom do they realize an alternative mode; hence cycle rally was the perfect way to encourage the people save energy.

"We are more and more dependent on mechanized way of transport. Very few realize that there is an alternative mode, which is available, doesn't use so much of energy and doesn't spoil the environment. We are here to stage awareness about the campaign," said Nair.

Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan, who is the brand ambassador of this campaign in India, pledged his family's support to the initiative and requested others as well including the entire Bollywood fraternity to follow the suit.

Reportedly, at least 15 cities including Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, have pledged their support for the campaign in India.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit, who was also present on the occasion urged citizens to switch off lights as well as other electrical equipments during Earth Hour.

She claimed that about 750 MW of electricity was conserved in Delhi last year during the Earth Hour.

Earth Hour is a concept initiated by WWF and is observed across the major cities of the world on the last Saturday of March annually to pledge support for protecting the environment.

This year Earth Hour is to be observed on March 27 between 8.30-9.30 PM (IST). ANI)
