Congress, BJP lash out at Maya's currency garland

New Delhi, Mar 17: Mayawati's defiance in accepting another garland of currency has not only enraged the country but has also invited sharp criticism from Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

While BJP has likened Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister to former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, Congress has dubbed BSP supremo's act as a 'vulgar display' of power and money.

"This is a vulgar display of money in politics. This is not good for any political party or a political leader," said Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed, while AICC general secretary in-charge of UP, Digvijay Singh remarked that Mayawati has turned from 'Dalit ki beti' to 'Daulat ki beti" (she is not the daughter of a Dalit, but daughter of wealth).

Despite the criticism against the currency garland estimated to be between Rs 21 lakh and Rs 5 crore presented to Mayawati on Monday, Mar 15, the chief minister on Wednesday, Mar 17 got herself garlanded with currency notes said to be of the value of Rs 18 lakh.
