London: Indian man jailed for raping teen

London, Mar 13: In yet another shameful scar on the Indian diaspora, an Indian man has been sentenced to nine years jail-term and also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life for raping a teenager in Apr 2009.

23-year-old Jagdeep Chahal, who was found guilty in Sep 2009, was sentenced to imprisonment on Friday, Mar 13 after a two week trial in London's Isleworth Crown Court.

Chahal followed his 18-year-old victim from a bus stop on the Uxbridge Road on Apr 8, 2009. Suspicious of Chahal, the victim even tried to slow down so that the man would pass her by, the court heard.

However, Chahal continued to follow her till her finally launched an assault on her. He dragged her to a alleyway, where he raped her.

A passerby who heard the screams called the police, who reportedly reached the spot within minutes. On the arrival of police, Chahal tried to escape by jumping a wall but he failed. The police detained him and charged him with rape on Apr 9, 2009 and remanded him to custody.
