Bareilly reels under communal tension

Bareilly, Mar 13: Fresh communal violence erupted in the Bareilly prompting the Uttar Pradesh government to rush in police reinforcements even as the curfew imposed in several parts of the district entered 13th day.

Release of Maulana Tauquir Raza Khan, a Muslim cleric, on Thursday, Mar 11 sparked off protests as members of a community took to violence and vandalism. At least 15 people were injured as protesters clashed with the police on Friday, Mar 12.

"The situation is still tense, but under control. For vandalism and violent protests, we have arrested 10 people. Security has been beefed up in parts of Bareilly in the wake of the fresh violence," Additional Director General (Law and Order) Brij Lal informed.

Khan, president of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council, was arrested for delivering a speech that led to communal clashes last week. Clashes and arson began on Mar 2.
