United Nations, Mar 11: As an act of solidarity with the people of earthquake-hit Chile, India has announced a financial aid of $5 million for relief and rehabilitation in Chile on Wednesday, Mar 10.

"As a country familiar with the consequences of natural disasters, we fully understand the trauma and suffering that our Chilean brethren are living through," India"s Permanent Representative to the U.N. Hardeep Singh Puri said

Adressing the informal meeting of the plenary of the United Nations General Assembly for a briefing by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Puri said that India lost no time in initiating measures to express solidarity with the people of Chile, after hearing about the devastating earthquake that hit Chile on Feb 27.

Puri, while expressing India's sympathy and support to the victim's family members, said that India has full confidence that the country will emerge stronger from the tragic incident.

"We have no doubt that the people of Chile have the strength and resilience to overcome this natural disaster," he said.

He also heaped praises on Ban-ki Moon, stating that the leadership shown by UN secretary general in coordinating UN"s response to the Chilean earthquake was remarkable.

“This is truly commendable," Puri said.
