RBI, govt of K'taka begin financial literacy prog

Bangalore, Mar 4: In an attempt to make financial education, both fun as well informative, the Reserve Bank of India in colloboration with the Government of Karnataka (GOK) had launched a Pilot Programme for financial literacy in the State.

In keeping with its objective to achieve financial literacy in the form of formal and non-formal education in schools and colleges, material on financial planning and products developed by RBI has been included in text books for classes V, VII, VIII and IX for the academic year 2010 -11.

Co-curricular activies like quiz and debate etc were roped in to achieve financial literacy through non-formal education.

RBI was given the responsibility to conduct Statewide quiz competitions at the block level, which will eventually culminate into a State level events during 2009-10 in association with GoK and Lead Banks.

The aim to introduce finacial litercay in non-formal education has been materialize as the State Level Quiz competetion is currently being conducted.

The quiz competitions, based on comic books-Raju and Money Kumar series, which was developed by RBI under Financial Literacy Series books has been brought out in both English and Kannada.

The oral and written Quiz competitions will be categorised into three-

- Category I - Std. 8th - 9th

- Category II - Std. 10th

- Category III - and Std. 11th-12th at the Block from the District and State Levels in both English and Kannada.

To help the students in preparing for the quiz competition, around 8.80 lakh comic books were distributed to the schools and colleges throughout the State.

The State Level Quiz competitions were conducted at RBI on Mar 3, 4 and 10, 2010 for each of the 3 categories in both English and Kannada.

The winners of all three categories in both the languages would receive an award from the Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa during a function of RBI and GoK on Mar 22, 2010.

The winners of the Category I of the competiton which was held on Mar 3 are as follows:

The paticipants for written quiz competitions at both the taluk and district levels were selected from 6089 schools and 1872 colleges in 181 taluks in the 29 districts of Karnataka which was conducted during Jan and Feb 2010.

The three winners at the district and taluk level will be awarded.
