Maoists shoot girl for filing rape case

Ranchi, Mar 5: A teenage girl's fight for honor was rewarded with gunshots by the Maoists. The Maoists pumped three bullets into teenage girl for filing rape charges against their leader, police said on Friday, Mar 5.

Police said 17-year-old Anju Kumari, who was kidnapped and raped by Maoist commander Pappu Lohra, was shot three times in her stomach on Thursday, Mar 4 for daring to file a complain against the Maoist commander.

"Anju was shot because she dared to raise a voice against Maoists. She had lodged an FIR against Pappu Lohra. Anju had accused Pappu of raping her for two days in a jungle after abducting her," a police official said in a news agency report.

Briefing about the incident, police said that Anju was stopped by three motorcycle-borne Maoists, including Lohra, when she was riding her bicycle near Latehar railway station.

The rebels shot three bullets into her stomach and fled from the scene, police said.

Anju is reportedly battling for her life and has been placed at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS)

"Anju sustained three bullets in her stomach. Her condition is critical," a doctor said.

However, local journalists said that the Maoists have alleged that the police were behind the fake rape case lodge against Lohra.
