Kerala Budget 2010: Rice at Rs 2/kg for the poor

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 5: Presenting the state budget for year 2010-11 in the assembly, Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Issac announced that starting from Jun 2010, rice will be made available at Rs 2/kg for the poor.

Apart from earmarking Rs 5000 cr for this, the finance minister presented various sops for green projects and welfare funds.

In his fourth budget presentation of the V S Achuthanandhan government, Mr Issac concentrated on public sector development, for which Rs 120 crore has been allotted.

The highlights of Kerala budget 2010-11 are listed below:

• Rs 1.5 cr for Landbank
• Set up 4 more police stations
• Rs 9 cr for rescue force
• Rs 2.5 cr for computerisation of Registration dept
• Rs 139 cr for tsunami rehabilitation
• Rs 20 cr for new Munnaar
• Rs 1058 cr for drinking water project
• Financial aid of Rs 5 cr for Kudumbasree in 2010-11
• Rs 11 cr for polytechnic development
• Aid to more families under the EMS scheme
• Rs 15 cr for new housing scheme
• Rs 1 cr for Neeleswaram EMS stadium
• Rs 67 cr for National Games
• Rs 121 cr for Shipping sector
• Rs 1000 cr for Green Fund
• Bala Sahitya Institute Rs 50 lakh
• Improve canals and waterways
