Sri Lankan, Indian attacked in Oz
Melbourne, Mar 2: Just when things seemed better for Asians in Australia, a Sri Lankan man and his Indian wife were attacked by a group of drunken men in their home.
According to a newspaper report, the 60-year-old Ranjit Sahasranaman was beaten up by 25 drunken thugs just outside his own home in Carrams Down suburb.
While informing about his over two-and-a-half hour ordeal with thugs, Sahasranaman said that he was assaulted and racially abused by group of mostly white men, who entered into his yard by damaging his fence.
The attackers dispersed after the police arrived on the scene.
He said that he was left with no other alternative but to fight the attackers as they got within centimetres of his back door.
"They were throwing punches at me," Sahasranaman said, adding "they were calling names and told me to get lost from this country."
One of the attacker who was injured in the ordeal was dropped home by the police.
Sahasranaman and his Indian-origin wife Agalya Sahasranamn have been living in Australia for the past 19 years.
The incident was reported even as foreign affairs minister Stephen Smith, who is India, is expected to assure India about the safety of its citizens in Australia.
