China: Fireworks at New year celebrations kill 19

Beijing, Feb 27: Celebrations marking the Lunar New Year turned into a massive mishap when fireworks triggered off an explosion killing as many as 19 people and wounding over 30.

The incident took place in a village in southern China late on Friday, Feb 26 as the country neared the end of its biggest holiday, which culminates on Sunday, Feb 28.

Fireworks is an important and a large part of the 15-day long New Year celebrations.

During the first week of the holiday fireworks-related accidents killed 11 people and injured more than 1,800 throughout the country, said China"s public security ministry.
