Taliban chief Hakimullah is dead: Pak officials
Peshwar, Feb 10: After weeks of speculations and rumours, Pakistani authorities have confirmed the death of Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud.
The Pakistan interior minister and a senior intelligence official on Wednesday, Feb 10, categorically said the militant chief is dead, reports an international news agency.
Even though they have not provided any details on Mehsud's death, it is, nevertheless, the first time that Pakistani authorities have commented on this.
Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), on the other hand, maintains that their head is still alive. However, they have failed to prove the same.
Hearsays of Mehsud's death have been doing the rounds for quiet some time now. Tha Taliban chief is believed to have been killed in a US drone strike in mid-Jan 2010 when Taliban stronghold in Pakistan"s northwest was targeted.
His predecessor Baitullah Mehsud was also killed in Aug 2009 in a US drone attack.
