Google's Chinese knockoff Goojje "will not change logo" despite legal threat

New Delhi, Feb 10 (ANI): Goojje, the Chinese search engine with a Google like logo "will not change" its design even as the American Internet giant threatens to sue it over copyright infringement.

Goojje's logo looks the logo of Google Inc and also features a paw print sign like that of Baidu Inc, the biggest Internet search engine in China and Google Inc's archrival in the country.

The website's interface also imitates those taken on by Google Inc and Baidu Inc, but lacks the copyright sign and a link indicating the website's license number issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Google has sent the operators of Goojje a cease and desist letter through a Beijing-based law firm, asking them to stop imitating Google's logo by Monday failing which they will be taken to court.

Goojje had, however, kept its logo and interface unchanged as of yesterday afternoon.

"The website is our team's achievement...It's impossible that we would close it down," the China Daily quoted Huang Jiongxuan, the founder and team leader of Goojje, as saying.

He added: "A lot of lawyers have offered to be our counsel for free, and we also have many supporters."

Huang, 24, and seven other young team members unveiled the website on Jan 14, a day after Google announced it would pull out of China.

And Goojje soon struck a chord with the Chinese users, partly ecause of its name

Its second syllable, "jje", is the same as the Chinese word "older sister", while that of Google, "gle", sounds like another Chinese word for "older brother".

Although, the website has been built as a search engine, experts point out that it produces search results by simply combining those of Google Inc and Baidu Inc.

However, Goojje's fans don't seem to care.

The website had an average page view of about 3 million in the first few days after the launch, claims Huang. (ANI)
