Turkish girl buried alive for talking to boys

Ankara, Feb 6: In a heinous act of honour killing, a 16-year-old girl was buried alive by her relative for talking to boys.

Identified as MM, the teenager, who was earlier reported missing, was found with her hands tied, inside a two-metre hole which was dug under chicken pen outside her home in Kahta, in the south-eastern province of Adiyaman.

A online version of the newspaper reported that the police found the body in Dec 2009, following a tip-off from an informant.

Police was informed that the act was carried out after a a family "council" meeting.

According to the post-mortem report, large amounts of soil were found in her lungs and stomach, which implied that the victim was alive and conscious at the time she was buried.

Her body was without any signs of bruise.

The father and grandfather of the girl have been held in custody, while the mother who was also arrested have been released.

Media reports said that the father of victim had expressed his unhappiness to his relatives, about his daughter, one of nine children, having male friends.

She was reportedly beaten up by her grandfather for the similar reason.

The incident adds to the list of 200 cases of honour killings taking place annually, according to official figures.
