Mysore, Feb 3: Three years after the IT hub Bangalore city became the first ever railway station in the country to have Wi-Fi connectivity, the railway station at Karnataka's popular tourist destination, Mysore gets a Wi-Fi makeover.

Wi-Fi facility at Mysore Railway station was launched on Monday, Feb 1, by Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Anup Dayanand Sadhu of the South-Western Railway and South Western Railway, Mysore division, B B Verma.

"This is the first of its kind private-public partnership in India where wireless internet services will be offered at a railway station via Wi-Fi," Sadhu said.

New Zealand-based Tomizone has partnered with Mysore Divisional Railways to equip the railway station with Internet facility, which will be available within a radius of 200 meters in the station.

This, in effect, means that passengers or any one using the station carrying a laptop or a high-end mobile phone can access the Internet through Wi-Fi.

The new facility at the railway station will be on a six-month trial basis and will fetch no revenues for the Mysore Railway zone, Mr Sadhu added.

This is because the Mysore Railway zone has not invested in the venture and hopes to conceptualise a revenue model later.

Verma said that if the facility succeeded, it could be extended to other stations.

This launch was inspired by the fact that Mysore railway station is used by a large number of tourists as well as businessmen and IT professionals. The facility could, therefore, bolster not only the city's image but also the state's image of being IT-friendly and tech savvy.
