Protests in Srinagar over death of 16-year-old

Srinagar, Feb 1: A large number of people staged protests in Srinagar on Monday, Jan 31, after a teenager was killed in police clashes.

A 16-year-old boy was killed after being hit on the head by a teargas shell fired by security personnel on Sunday, Jan 31.

The injured boy was rushed to Soura Medical Institute, but he succumbed to his injuries.

Tension and chaos prevailed in the city even though the authorities suspended an assistance sub-inspector for acting in a negligent and careless manner.

Shops in many areas remained closed and residents took to streets to protest the killing of Wamik Farooq. Protesters pelted stones at policemen deployed in the area.

According to police spokesman, an inquiry has been ordered into the incident and further action is being initiated.

Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the old city as a precautionary measure.
