Compulsory voting in polls impossible: EC
New Delhi, Jan 25: The Election Commission on Monday, Jan 25, ruled out making voting compulsory at the national level during Lok Sabha and Assembly polls
Speaking to reporters, Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla said, "It is almost impossible to enforce."
He was responding to a question when asked about Gujarat government's law to make voting compulsory in local body polls in the state.
He refused to comment on the state legislature passing a law in this regard.
Chawla said the State Election Commissioner was an independent Constitutional authority and he must respect that position.
