Love Jihad probe: K'taka HC grants time to police

Bangalore, Jan 19: Following a plea by the state government, Karnataka High Court on Tuesday, Jan 19 granted additional time of six weeks to the state police to probe into the 'Love Jihad' movement and submit its report.

Karnataka and Kerala saw a surge in the 'Love Jihad' movement in 2009 when muslim youths allegedly lured girls from other communities in the name of love and marriage to convert them to Islam.

Karnataka has formed a special cell to probe into the 'love jihad' movement, headed by DIG Central Investigation Department (CID) Malini Krishnamurthy.

The HC Division Bench which granted the plea, also took note of the Kerala High Court judgement of Dec 9, 2009 on love jihad which was placed on record.

Observing that there were indications of 'forceful' religious conversions in the name of 'love' in Kerala, the HC had asked the government to consider enacting a law against such 'deceptive acts'.
