Hospital prepares to receive Jyoti Basu's body

Kolkata, Jan 18: State-run SSKM hospital is busy making arrangements to receive the body of former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu, which is expected to brought to the hospital on Tuesday, Jan 19.

On Monday, Jan 18, Health minister Suryakanta Mishra called for a meeting with doctors and officials of the Anatomy department and the Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research (IPGMER).

“Basu"s body will be used for medical study and research by students and research fellows," doctors at the hospital said.

The doctors refused to give any further details.

The veteran Left leader who died on Sunday, Jan 17 at the age of 95 had pledged to donate his body in 2003.

“As a communist, I am pledged to serve humanity till my last breath. I am happy now I will continue to serve even after my death," Mr Basu's pledge written at a function organised by an NG0 called Ganadarpan.

Since Basu had also pledged to donate his eyes, his eyes were removed by doctors of Sushrut Eye Foundation at Salt Lake, after his dead on Sunday, Jan 17 morning.

CPI(M) sources revealed that Basu"s corneas have been kept for the Muktakeshi eye foundation.
