Govt to rename HCs on present city names
New Delhi, Jan 15: In keeping with the change in place names, the government is mulling over the proposal to change the name of high courts to the present names of places in which they are located.
The Ministry of Law and Justice has received a proposal to rename Bombay High, Madras High Court, Calcutta High Court and Gauhati High Court to correspond to the present names of the cities.
“The proposal to change the names of 'Bombay High Court" as 'Mumbai High Court", 'Calcutta High Court" as 'Kolkata High Court", 'Gauhati High Court" as 'Guwahati High Court" and "Madras High Court" as 'Chennai High Court" is under consideration of Government. There is no move to rename other High Courts," Ministry of Law and Justice has said in an RTI reply to Subhash Chandra Agrawal.
The Ministry has forwarded Subhash's request on rules of RTI application to Department of Personnel and Training.
“Department of Justice is not concerned with framing of the Rules under the RTI Act, 2005," the ministry said.
In his request, Subhash has asked whether the rules on RTI application will differ from one High Court to another.
