Bird flu confirmed in West Bengal, culling begins
Behrampore, Jan 15: A day after the bird flu outbreak in Murshidabad district was confirmed, the culling of flu-affected chickens began.
The culling drive started at Khargram and Nabagram areas in Murshidabad district on Friday, Jan 15.
The possibility of the birds being affected by H5N1 (avian influenza), or bird flu, emerged when hundreds of them died here over the past few days.
Tests done on the samples of the dead birds at Animal Disease Laboratory (ADL) in Bhopal confirmed bird flu prompting the authorities to begin the culling drive.
Precautionary and preparatory measures have been initiated at hospitals in Khargram and Kandi, in case the disease spread among humans, chief medical officer of the district, Subhas Mondol informed.
