Stampede at Gangasagar, 7 pilgrims killed
Gangasagar(West Bengal), Jan 14: At least seven pilgrims were killed in a stampede at the Gangasagar mela on Thursday, Jan 14 morning.
The Stampede that took place when the pilgrims were trying to board a boat to go to the annual Ganga Sagar mela in West Bengal"s south 24 Parganas district, police said.
Over 12 people were also injured in the mishap.
“They pushed each other, trying to board the vessel ahead of others. That caused the accident," police are quoted as saying in news reports.
“They broke the barricade and tried to go ahead. We had asked them not to board any vessel then, as the water level was low," police added.
The mishap ocurred as lakhs of people converged here to take a holy dip on the auspicious day of Makar Sankranti.
