Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 13: A noted Malayalam writer Paul Zacharia has come under an attack from CPM and other youth outfits for criticising the way political parties reacted to the arrest of Congress leader Rajmohan Unnithan along with a woman from a house at Manjery.

On Saturday, Jan 9, the writer expressed anguish over the way certain sections of Kerala society had become so narrow minded and made a big issue of two adults sitting in a house.

He further alleged that like the Church, CPM was trying to impose conservative attitudes towards sex.

Following this, Zacharia was abused and manhandled by some Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activists.

On Tuesday, Jan 12, police registered cases, under IPC sections 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), against a group of people in connection with this incident.

The attack on the writer has invited widespread criticism from writers, intellectuals as well as Left sympathisers.

However, a media report published on Wednesday, Jan 13 quotes CPM Politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan defending activists' violent act describing it as a natural outburst of comrades.
