Parents beat, force Kiwi daughter to marry beau's dad after receiving 'pig' dowry
Wellington, January 10 (ANI): Parents of a 17-year-old girl in New Zealand allegedly assaulted, abducted and forced her to marry her boyfriend's father after he gave the guardians a dowry of a large pig and expensive mats.
The two families involved had reached an agreement and the girl was obliged to honour it.
But on the wedding night, last year she escaped with her lover.
Later, she was allegedly assaulted, abducted by her mother and stepfather and forced to have sex with the groom.
But, the girl, of Tongan descent, went to court to seek a restraining order against her mother.
The mother and her husband need to reappear in court later this month.
They face six charges, which can lead to a maximum prison term of 14 years.
However, the mother has been dismissive towards all questions.
"My family's problems are gone... I don't want to say anything," Stuff.co.nz quoted her as telling the Star-Times. (ANI)
