US warns of possible attacks on Uganda flights

Khartoum, Jan 9: Amid the increased threat perception in flights and airports, US has sounded an alert on 'regional extremists' plotting attack on Air Uganda flights between southern Sudan and Kampala.

On Friday, Jan 8, US Embassy in Khartoum published an alert on its website warning of "a potential threat against commercial aviation transiting between Juba, Sudan and Kampala, Uganda".

"The US Embassy has received information indicating a desire by regional extremists to conduct a deadly attack onboard Air Uganda aircraft on this route," the embassy statement read.

The statement added that it was not clear whether the group had the ability to mount an attack but warned air passengers to be alert.

Even though it did not name any potential attackers, the embassy has said in the past that terrorist groups were active in Sudan.
