Srinagar: 19 hours and gunbattle still on
Almost 19 hours after the terror attack began, the gunbattle between the militants and security personnel here is still on.

Media reports suggest that the operation has reached a critical phase as the police forces get ready for the final assault against the two terrorists holed up inside Hotel Punjab at Lal Chowk.

Police and CRPF personnel have managed to rescue several people from the hotel adjacent to Amira Kadal bridge.

The attack began at around 2 pm on Wednesday, Jan 6, when four terrorists launched the attack by hurling grenades at Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers. This was followed by firing.

Two out of the four terrorists have reportedly escaped.

Jamiet-e-Mujahideen, a local militant outfit, has claimed responsibility for the fidayeen (suicide squad) attack.

As of now the death toll remains two. Two CRPF personnel were killed during the operations on Wednesday, Jan 6.
