China coalmine fire kills 18 people

Beijing, Jan 6: At least 18 miners have been killed and nine others trapped in a coal mine fire in China, officials said on Wednesday, Jan 6.

Nine workers were still trapped in the Lisheng Coal Mine in Hunan province where underground cables caught fire on Tuesday evening, Jan 5.

According to officials, about 70 miners were working in the shaft at the time of the incident. Forty-three of them managed to escape.

Rescuers retrieved nine bodies from a mining platform in the shaft about 160 metres underground, officials said.
