Systemic failure allowed airline plot: Obama
Honolulu, Dec 30: President Barack Obama said he wants a preliminary accounting into what went wrong that allowed explosives to make it onto US airliner.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, Dec 29, Obama said, "A systemic failure has occurred that led a catastrophic breach of security and allowed Nigerian to board a plane to the United States despite warnings from the suspect's father."
"Deficiencies allowed the suspect to get as far as he did," Obama said adding that he wants to hear what went wrong and how the United States can better protect its skies.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian, is suspected of trying to ignite an explosive called PETN using a chemical-filled syringe as Northwest Flight 253 approached Detroit on Dec 25.
