Al-Qaeda takes blame for US plane attack

Sanaa, Dec 29: A regional wing al-Qaeda has claimed responsibility for the foiled Christmas eve explosion aboard US flight by a Nigerian national, according to a web statement posted on Monday, Dec 28.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has warned US to be prepared for similar terror attacks.

The group claimed that the attack was carried out to avenge the US attack on al-Qaeda in Yemen in which 30 al-Qaeda members were killed.

"We tell the American people that since you support the leaders who kill our women and children ... we have come to slaughter you (and) will strike you with no previous (warning), our vengeance is near," the statement said

On Dec 17, Yemen government had carried out a military raid against the group using US jets.

Earlier, US president Barack Obama said that the nation would use every element in its power to keep Americans safe, adding that the foiled bombingwas reminder to beefed up security measures.

On Dec 25, the suspected al-Qaeda operative, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab had tried to set off explosive device aboard Northwestern airlines bound to Detroit from Amsterdam
