Sydney, Dec 28 (ANI): The average alcohol consumption of Aussies triples during the festive season, a new study has found.

A research by Australian charity FebFast shows that alcohol intake is the most during December and January and even surpasses birthdays, work drinks and traditional weekend socialising.he study saw 1006 Australians from all states and territories being quizzed on their drinking habits.

A quarter of the participants reported shelling off anything between 200dollars and 1000dollars on alcohol during December and January, while seven percent said they drank during the festive season to help cope with their family.

"There's nothing wrong with enjoying the summer and the season's festivities, but we need to be aware of how much some Australians get carried away and take celebrations to excess," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted FebFast chief executive Fiona Healy, as saying in a statement.

The poll revealed that most respondents drink once in a week and the habit surges to three days a week during festive season.

It was also seen that one-third of Aussies took over 10 standard drinks a week in the festive season.

Forty nine percent people aged 20 to 29 confessed to binge drinking during the festive season, with men drinking more than women.

Although, one-third of respondents in each state and territory thought they drank too much in December and January, in the Northern Territory, no one believed they drank too much.

Healy said: "Only one in five Australians have actually tried to give up or reduce the booze as a new year's resolution and of those who tried, 40 per cent failed in less than a month." (ANI)
